Dumbledore is gay – a belated response
I honestly don’t know why I feel so cut up about this. Its certainly nothing against homosexuals!
If he was gay, at the age he was working with Grindleward they would have been sexual partners. Thus he had to defeat someone with whom he had shared an intimate part of himself. That might have justified some of his actions that seemed selfish at the time.
I understand that the same over reacting parents may have been concerned about the possible implications of having a gay character in the book but Rowling could have done it skillfully enough so only the adults would have understood.
I laughed at the backlash by some parents about ‘Bitch’ being used. Especially the same morons who reposted saying “Well, I wasn’t the one who said what happened” in response to the rest who were arguing that swearing can be used within context.
Oh yes – I recall a famous author stepping into the debate stating “Sometimes, there is no literary equivilant to certain words.” I request anyone considering otherwise, email me for a Documentary recommendation.
I think its a sense of betrayel that we weren’t trusted as an audience, but thankfully she is kind enough to keep fans in the loop.

Origins of Marvel Comics by Stan Lee
This book is a must for anyone who has recently discovered the joys of comics, despite its 1974 publication date.
Stan Lee is an exemplory writer and it was an honour to be let into his life, and his mind. I got the background into all of the most popular and was able to understand the theories behind their creation. It had the dirt on Spiderman, The Hulk and Fantastic Four as well as ones I’d vaguely heard of, like Dr Strange and Thor.
I now feel equipped to get into a basic discussion of most immediate comic issues. Premature as it is, I have now been able to make basic decisions as to which characters and artists I now prefer.
It was brilliant just reading Lee’s writing in a longer form.
I wonder how many others like this there are out there, and where they can beobtained from.
The Savage She Hulk Essentials Volume One: Review
Having struggled through the first two Hulk essentials, I didn’t have much expectations for this. I was wrong. It is my favourite collection thus far.
Unlike The Hulk, whose storylines were too confusing, the entire story was held on earth. Even though she’d oft turn into the Hulk, there was an element of Humanity that at many times, the Hulk didn’t have. Of course, this is coming from newbie who has been completely overwhelmed by many storylines.
Nothing confused me, nor was forgotten. Every character and enemy remains. The storylines were ones I could identify with though I was assured it was purposely sexist, yet in a satirical way. The animation and story wasn’t great yet it didn’t overwhelm me.
I didn’t like how Skimpy the outfit was yet can’t complain as the original Hulk wears even less clothes :grins: It was also uber pleasing to get a whole story out of the way, rather than have multiple stories going.
Its not the best, but thus far its the complete story I’ve enjoyed the most.

Reading Geeky Mags from the early 90s
Part of the Comic book box included some Comic rerlated Magazines:
And Wizard May 1992.
My favourite is Wizard then Hero. Comics Interview would probably be obsolete with the technological advances. With Wizard, I was annoyed at the number of prices but it was early 90’s.
I really enjoy reading old magazines! I found out the following things:
- V for Vendette was a graphic novel! I thought it was a try hard follow up to the matrix and hated it.
- Alien vs Predator was a graphic novel and the movie had been hyped for many years, at least a decade
- Theres a spiderman series (I have one of the 2099!!ers) based around the death of his parents
- Infinity War series. Sounds exciting but don’t want to know how many books there are. It says its a sequel to Infinity Gauntlet
Plus the ins and outs of company restructures and business side of things. Its really fascinating!
From a collectors standpoint is it worth collecting the magazines based on the comic industry as well? I want some investments that aren’t tied into banks in a sense, should society collapse
20 years later ‘ooh not many copies of these going around!’ and boom, can retire!
Was given a stack of comic books
I want to give a huge thanks to one of mums friends. Upon meeting him at Peter Combe dressed in my Captain America Tee – and Toffee Apple Badge – we had a brief chat about comics. I hadn’t read much but had basic favourites.
Last night I finally organised them according to title to make it easier to research. Of course, my girl made it hard:
Don’t fear, she only wanted to play in the box!
I have a small stack on my bed-couch that will be read quite soon. They are:
-The amazing Spiderman: 363, 2, 355, 353, 356
- Captain America: Blood Stone: Parts 3 and 4 of 6
- Daredevil: 237, 264
- The incredible hulk: 269, 352, 364, 357, 356, 354
- Sensational She hulk: Vol 2 nos 1, 2, 3, 4 5, 6, 11
- Marvel Tales feat Spiderman: 269
- Marvel Tales feat Spiderman and Ghostrider: 255
- Web of Spiderman 81
- Peter Parker, the spectacular Spider-man 63
- spidermam 2099 Vol 1 no 37.
If anyone has any information or tidbits on any of these, I’d be really interested. I still have to research others AND finish the books that I was also given.
Am so thankful yet my brains going to go boom
Voices of a Distant Star: OST Review
This is best score I have heard all year – Dr Who has been usurped!
Its intrinsic and simplistic. Its essentially a variation of the one theme which was repeated throughout the entire OVA. I didn’t think it was possible for the same notes to convey so many different emotions.
The tempo and intensity in ‘Rainy Bus Stop’ really conjures the image of rain falling. Its beautiful by itself because its solely piano. The prior track ‘Introduce’ is also solely piano yet doesn’t have the same imagery. Its still a sublime piece of music by itself but pales slightly in comparison.
Letter from Mikako is slightly quirkier musically, even if its just subtle. Its as if a sense of whimsy was hinted at. Being a longer track it had to convey more emotion. I felt this detracted from the overall tone of the score as most were short hints of music that just whet your appetite for the later tracks.
Battle was quite good, but it seemed at an inopportune place in the score. It still carried the same theme amongst the granduer. The previous tracks had a completely different tone. It would have been better placed near Lows tracks.
Sadness at Seperating is enough to bring a tough woman to tears. It echos of both strength and fragility. It doesn’t appear to have a climax, just trailing off, yet doesn’t overwhelm. Noburu’s decision aptly includes other instruments which render the track ever so magical. It hadnles repeated playings. Again, the track doesn’t climax as such.
Agata’s rain combined elements from most previous tracks. It is by far my favourite.
Low’s songs were great yet I prefered the instrumental tracks.
As mentioned, best score of the year. Best anime score. I don’t endorse downloading but if you are sincerely broke track this down any way possible. Its sheer briliance.
Make sure you listen to the Voices of a Distant Star Soundtrack
Singles VS Trades with Comics
This is inspired by an Around Comics podcast where this issue was discussed well enough for a newbie like me to understand the whole concept.
When I first got into some nerdish hobbies, I was first drawn to anime and manga. The graphic novels available were $15 for 8 stories. I still struggle to fork out that amount (and have since got out of Manga collecting) for a relatively short story.
I’m approaching from someone who is spoilt in all the different forms of media and concepts that are offered. I haven’t witnessed the evolution of any of these mediums so many of my ideas/beliefs are naive.
In a sense, I don’t see a point in publishing a single issue except for the die hard fans and the collectors. In my collection, I’d very much prefer the novel over a single issue. Its a lot easier to digest a full story in one sitting. Its much easier to store. By waiting I don’t have to keep a million storylines in my head.
I’m trying to get through 40+ years of backstory so my head feels like its exploding at times with all the storylines.
I have to research:
- whether manga has changed the American industry
- is the change of age in readership affect how its published
- has the internet changed it?
I’d have no problems downloading a PDF of some comics because of the storage issues.
if anything, the technology of the mordern ones make it not worthwhile to pay the price for the individual comics. I’m not sure if the modern ones have inkers or letterers but it certainly has less dialogue.
Baluka can sing!
Whilst in the middle of my Quantum obsession, I discovered that he can actually sing. Now I have to track down the many recommended recordings! Anyone have any hints on where to find these two?
- Anyone Can Whistle – Live at Carnegie Hall (1995 Broadway Concert Cast) [LIVE] [CAST RECORDING]
- soundtrack of the Broadway production of “Romance, Romance.”
I hope if he is in another production, it comes to Australia. He is sublime with his acting. He’s like the acting equivalent of Zimmer and Gold combined and that is the highest compliment.
I miss that series.
Showing My Age Again
Yesterday I partook in a DVD swap session. I was asked if I’d seen the old war of the Worlds. I have somewhat overdosed on this franchise so the only connection I could make was ..
.. “The one where they spent most of the movie hiding behind a car?”
Thus unwittingly unleashing the comic within.
